John Hunter Hospital
Paediatrics Surgical/Oncology Ward (25/5/20 – 19/6/20) 160 hours
I thoroughly enjoyed this clinical placement and felt as though I developed good paediatrics nursing skills throughout my time spent at the children’s hospital. I developed a new understanding of paediatric medications and the way in which they are calculated for administration based on a child’s weight. I also become familiar with the paediatrics BTF observation chart, the importance of play therapy and effectively communicating with families. I become confident in priming an IV line and administering intravenous fluids. I also learnt about cytotoxic drugs and involved myself in the care of oncology patients undergoing treatment. Working with children meant I had to ensure I delivered my care through a family centred lens as well as develop a trusting relationship with both my patient and their family. I believe I achieved this on my placement.
